The War of Art: Beyond Resistance
Week 5 — The Courage to Be Seen
How much of ourselves do we hide out of fear of being rejected, judged, or misunderstood?
We all have parts of ourselves that we hesitate to reveal. Perhaps we hold back our opinions, suppress our desires, avoid expressing our needs, or hesitate to pursue something meaningful because we’re afraid of how others might respond.
Sometimes, the fear of rejection becomes so powerful that we reject ourselves first. We silence our voices, minimize our needs, or convince ourselves that we don’t really want the very things we long for.
But what happens when our desire to feel safe begins to interfere with our desire to be known?
Inspired by Steven Pressfield’s The War of Art, this third gathering in our 8-week personal growth workshop will explore the relationship between resistance, vulnerability, authenticity, and our need for acceptance.
Rather than trying to eliminate our fears, we’ll explore what it means to make room for discomfort while allowing ourselves to be more fully expressed.
For our third meeting, we’ll explore:
- How does fear of rejection influence the way we show up in relationships and social situations?
- What parts of ourselves do we hide to feel accepted or safe?
- How does perfectionism prevent us from expressing ourselves authentically?
- Are we waiting for others to make us feel safe enough to be vulnerable?
- Can we allow ourselves to be seen without needing to control how others perceive us?
- What might change if we became more willing to express our desires, needs, and feelings openly?
What to expect:
We’ll begin by reflecting on our experiences since the previous gathering and discussing ideas from Book Three: Beyond Resistance — The Higher Realm.
Through guided journaling and thoughtful group conversation, we’ll examine how our fear of judgment, rejection, and uncertainty can shape the choices we make.
We’ll also participate in a personal reflection exercise exploring something we’ve been afraid to say, ask for, create, or pursue.
The goal isn’t to force vulnerability but to better understand what holds us back and discover how we might begin expressing ourselves with greater courage and self-acceptance.
Before we meet:
Please read Book Three: Beyond Resistance — The Higher Realm and reflect on the following question:
If I knew I wouldn’t be rejected, judged, or embarrassed, what would I allow myself to express or pursue?
You might also consider whether there are areas of your life where you’ve been waiting for someone else’s encouragement, approval, or reassurance before allowing yourself to take action.
Bring a journal or notebook if you’d like.
About the series:
This is the third of four gatherings in our 8-week personal growth workshop. We meet every other week to explore resistance, self-discovery, vulnerability, and the courage to live more authentically.
Each gathering combines ideas from The War of Art with personal reflection and meaningful group discussion.
You don’t need to have attended the previous meetings to participate. Everyone is welcome, and sharing personal experiences is always optional.
Vulnerability doesn’t mean revealing everything to everyone. It means giving ourselves permission to be authentic, even when we cannot guarantee how others will respond.
Perhaps courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the willingness to let ourselves be known despite it.
