What we’re about
The foundation of zen practice is zazen, the Japanese word means ´sitting meditation’, it is the practice of being here now, of sitting in this present moment. We sit together in the dojo, also called a zendo, and we practice zazen together in a structured and supportive environment. Here at Earth+Sky we have a daily, a weekly and a yearly cycle of events, all centered around the practice of zazen but including other connected activities.
Mary Soshin Laheen Roshi is the teacher at Earth+Sky Zen Dublin Dojo, and is a member of the White Plum Asanga, an international affinity group of Maezumi lineage teachers. Mary received shiho (dharma transmission) from Roshi Robert Kennedy SJ in 2019. She began zen practice in the 1990s with Alain Liebmann, a zen monk in the Deshimaru lineage, and lived at Gotanjoji Temple, Japan in 2008, where she was ordained by Kōshū Itabashi Zenji.
We encourage people to practice daily meditation, something that has become central to the lives of zen practitioners in our community, even though we may have jobs, families and worldly responsibilities. Through our practice we recognise ‘zen mind’ in our daily life. We organize Zazen Days, Weekend Retreats/ Sesshins, and a Week-long Retreat during the summer. Our schedule of events follows the traditional Gaelic calendar. We have Zazen days on the Solstices and Equinoxes and, Sesshins on the traditional Gaelic festivals of Samhain, Imbolc, Bealtaine and Lúnasa.
