Paul Cezanne: A Bridge Between Styles
Details
French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Cézanne formed the bridge between late 19th century Impressionism and early 20th century Cubism, also influencing Fauvism and Expressionism. From still lifes with fruit that seem to defy gravity to breaking down the human figure to geometric forms, his art conveys his intense study of his subjects. He ignored classical laws of perspective, allowing objects to be independent within a picture's space. He used planes of color and repetitive brushstrokes to build volume and form, rather than traditional light and shadow.
