Make it Queer, Again! The Black Cat Social Hour in Silverlake

Details

Please join us at a very special California landmark with a special place in Queer History for a mellow and chill outdoor social hour. See below for the history around this iconic establishment.

When I lived in San Francisco me and friends used to bring all the queer people we knew to a bar or restaurant and deemed it a "Queer Bar" just for that night. The local businesses got support through patronage and we all had a great time catching up.

The Black Cat is a Silverlake stalwart and is a full service bar and restaurant. They have plenty of options for those who don't imbibe including mocktails and soft drinks. They have an outdoor picnic table area which is where we'll meet!

Only thing you need to bring is yourself and a smile!

Please note that due to this being a small business we will have a limit of 15 people attending so if plans change or you decide not to come, please change your RSVP so that anyone potentially on a waitlist can grab a spot.

I plan on doing more of these so if this doesn't work out, please monitor the event calendar for more Make it Queer opportunities.

The Black Cat Tavern: How LA Played a Crucial Role in the Start of Queer Rights.

On February 11, 1967, hundreds of LGBTQ Angelenos met at the Sunset and Hyperion to protest mistreatment by the police. The rally—organized after plainclothes officers beat and arrested 14 people at the Black Cat Tavern for kissing at a New Year’s Eve celebration—was the largest demonstration for gay rights that had ever occurred in the U.S. (Two years later protestors would take to the streets of New York City in the Stonewall Uprising.)
