We will meet at the trailhead on Gadpouch Rd in East Hampton at 10:45 am and leave promptly at 11:00. We will be starting at the southern terminus of the Shenipsit Trail and head north, and within 1/2 mile we will hit a very steep, slippery incline rising several hundred feet up Great Hill. This is as steep as it gets w/o having to scramble, so experience with this type of terrain is highly recommended.
From Great Hill we will take a brief spur to a vista with a great view of the Connecticut River in Portland. We will then return to the Shenipsit, and continue north, encountering a waterfall and several rock and cave formations, to Bald Hill (el. 893'). We will return along the same route.

Distance: 7 miles, time: 4 hours

Difficulty: A few difficult ascents with slippery leaves and possibly some wet areas, otherwise moderate.

Pace: 2-2.5 mph

Please wear appropriate footwear (i.e. hiking boots and poles, (no sneakers) and clothing, and bring at least one liter of water per person, and high calorie snacks.

Rain/snow cancels.

Also note: (although I have never encountered one here, even in the summer) this is one of the few areas of the state with a few rattlesnakes, but most or all of them should be hibernating. Any still active would be on sunny, rocky areas. They are not aggressive unless you deliberately or accidentally annoy them., and they will "rattle" first. ***
