Texas Hold'em Rules (Quick Overview):
Texas Hold'em is played with a standard 52-card deck. Each player aims to make the best five-card hand using a combination of their two private hole cards and up to five community cards dealt face-up in the center of the table.
- The Deal: Each player receives two private cards (hole cards).
- The Betting Rounds: There are four rounds of betting:
- Pre-Flop: Betting occurs after players receive their hole cards, starting with the player to the left of the "big blind."
- The Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table. Betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer button.
- The Turn: A fourth community card is dealt face-up. Betting starts with the player to the left of the dealer button.
- The River: A fifth and final community card is dealt face-up. The final round of betting occurs.
- The Showdown: If more than one player remains after the final betting round, they reveal their hole cards, and the player with the best five-card hand (using either both hole cards and three of the community cards, or one hole card and four of the community cards, or no hole cards and all five community cards) wins the pot. If the board (all five community cards) constitutes the best possible five-card hand, then the pot is split among the remaining players at showdown.
- Betting Actions: Players can choose to:
- Fold: Discard their hand and no longer participate in the current pot.
- Check: Pass the action to the next player (only if no bets have been made in the current round).
- Bet: Place an initial wager. (minimum bet is the big blind)
- Call: Match the current bet.
- Raise: Increase the current bet. (minimum raise is twice the current bet)
Hand Strength (Ranked from Highest to Lowest):
Understanding the ranking of poker hands is crucial to playing Texas Hold'em:
- Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, Ten of the same suit (e.g., A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠).
- Straight Flush: Five cards in rank sequence, all of the same suit (e.g., J♥ 10♥ 9♥ 8♥ 7♥).
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank (e.g., K♣ K♦ K♥ K♠ 5♦).
- Full House: Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank (e.g., 3♣ 3♦ 3♠ 6♥ 6♣).
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit, not in rank sequence (e.g., A♦ 10♦ 7♦ 5♦ 2♦).
- Straight: Five cards in rank sequence, but not all of the same suit (e.g., J♣ 10♦ 9♠ 8♥ 7♣).
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank (e.g., 9♥ 9♦ 9♠ K♣ 2♦).
- Two Pair: Two cards of one rank and two cards of another rank (e.g., J♣ J♦ 5♥ 5♠ A♣).
- One Pair: Two cards of the same rank (e.g., 4♠ 4♥ K♦ 7♣ 2♠).
- High Card: If no player has any of the above hands, the highest ranking card wins (e.g., A♥ K♠ 8♦ 5♣ 2♥ - Ace high).
