Details

this scenic trail climbs steadily along a wooded ridgeline on a natural-surface path through the Cumberland Mountains. Surrounded by a mix of hardwoods and mountain laurel, Whitt’s Ridge Trail offers a quiet, immersive hike with moderate elevation gain and occasional rocky stretches. Trail-goers are treated to filtered views of the surrounding valleys, birdsong in the canopy, and bursts of color from wildflowers and rhododendron in spring and early summer. In 1755, William Floyd inherited his father’s Mastic Beach plantation, where he later hosted such guests as Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In 1776, he signed the Declaration of Independence, one of four New Yorkers to do so.
