How often have you drawn a city street and left out the cars because they were too hard? In the spirit of the 100 people challenge, let's do a week of car practice and never be afraid of cars again.
Figure out what you need to learn and start practicing. If you need a basic understanding of the structure, do piles of messy pencil studies from different angles, with a lot of sighting and measuring. If you need to develop a semi-abstract style which will work in your loose watercolors, fill up a page with blobs of color to see which ones look like cars. If you're already good at cars, do some showoff sketches to inspire the rest of us.
Social distance sketching:
Sketching is always more fun to do with other people, but for the near future it looks like it's going to be a bad idea to get within virus droplet range of each other. Instead of moping around reading doomsday scenarios on the internet, let's use the time for some focused practice.
Post your suggestions for next week's theme! The Italian urban sketchers on lockdown are sketching the views out their windows and I think that showing our neighborhoods, one drawing at a time, is never a bad idea. I imagine that some of us will be doing sketches of hospital waiting rooms and respirators, but even a global emergency is no excuse to stop sketching.
Let's think of some good hashtags for posting on social media sites. Here are some ideas: #socialdistancesketching #SketchingTogether6FeetApart #sfsketchersathome #inmyneighborhood #whatimwatching #viewfrommywindow
Post your sketches to the Photos section here on Meetup too!
