Winter Solstice - Arvo Pärt & Sibelius
Details
Brighton Philharmonic perform the hauntingly spiritual music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt alongside Sibelius' beautiful evocation of Nordic landscapes.
Pärt - Lamentate (35 mins)
Pärt - Spiegel im Spiegel ['Mirror in Mirror'] (10 mins)
Sibelius - Symphony No 2 (45 mins)
Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel is a piece you've almost certainly heard - frequently used in TV dramas and documentaries for its mood of stillness and contemplation - a perfect 'mindfulness' moment.
Lamentate meanwhile is an intense yet gripping work of extreme contrasts, originally designed for performance in the Tate Modern's vast Turbine Hall beneath the giant sculpture Marsyas by Anish Kapoor.
Music of a sunnier disposition then opens Sibelius' 2nd Symphony in a glorious expression of Finnish independence.
