WEEKDAY WALK: LEWES-MT CABURN CIRCULAR (5.8 MILES)

Details

Hi all. This walk starts and ends at Lewes Railway Station. Please note, to enjoy the glorious views at the top, the walk is weather dependent: If it's a clear day we will go; if it's overcast I will switch to an alternative route and save this for a better day. Please do not book your train ticket until the walk is confirmed.

Route details: After a pleasant walk through historic Lewes, we climb a steep hill to Lewes Golf Course followed by a triangular route over the Downs climbing steadily to Mount Caburn before returning back to Lewes. It's about 6 miles and quite hilly, but worth it for the wonderful views.

There are no coffee stops on route so please bring a drink, snack and sitmat; we will take a lunch break on the top of Mt Caburn. There's an optional coffee stop in The Depot close to Lewes station at the end of the walk.

Well behaved dogs are welcome, on leads around livestock, and I walk with a friendly hound called Josie.

I've listed the train departure times below. Anyone not travelling by train should meet outside Lewes station ready to start the walk at 1030.

Hastings 0925, St Leonards 0929, Bexhill 0936, Cooden Beach 0941, Pevensey & Westham 0950, Eastbourne 0955, Polegate 1004 arr Lewes 1020. NB. Passengers joining between Hastings & Pevensey should
change trains at Hampden Park. Let's all aim to meet in the 4th carriage from the front.

Seaford train 0953 arr Lewes 1011.

Hopefully the weather will stay fine. Either way, I hope to confirm the walk by Wednesday evening. If you are unable to attend on the day, please call or text me on 07764 677363 in case I can't access MeetUp.

Thanks Alison

Cautionary note: I've been advised that ticks may be in the grass in this area. They are all along the South Downs and have been for years but maybe they are more abundant this season?? If you don't want to wear long trousers tucked into socks I suggest you apply anti-mossie/deet as the little critters don't like that!
