### **INTRODUCTION**

**Sumba**, natively also spelt as **Humba** or **Hubba** (in Sumba languages) is an Indonesian island located in Eastern Indonesia and administratively part of the East Nusa Tenggara provincial territory. The largest town on the island is the main port of Waingapu with a population of 70,060 (including the adjoining district of Kambera) in mid-2022. Besides the natural attractions such as beaches, lakes, waterfalls and stunning savanna hills, Sumba is known for its culture that is still well preserved.

One of their popular cultural events is Pasola, held by the Western Sumbanese to herald a good rice harvest. During the event, we can see the traditional war game between two groups of villagers on horseback throwing blunted wooden spears at their opponents to dismount one another and demonstrate their horse-riding skills.
