Meet at the trail map by the Rock Springs Trailhead parking lot on Mt Tam.
Curator of Lichenology, Dr. Klara Scharnagl, will lead a walk around the Rock Springs area to introduce folks to lichen diversity. We will explore the different substrates that lichens can grow on, and the different growth forms that lichens can take. Klara will discuss the ecology of lichens, and will introduce a few key species that are easy to identify in the field.
Lichen walks tend to follow a slow ambling pace with frequent stops. Sometimes looking at lichens involves bending over or squatting down in order to get a good look. Please bring a hand lens or magnifying glass (and/or binoculars), as this greatly enhances the lichen-viewing experience!
