(Craig's List ad posted by EBCOHO member Sven. Come visit the community Monday 11/12 for a Spaghetti dinner - RSVP here).

Thanks for reading our ad! We are a group of thirteen people in our 20s and 30s, living cooperatively in both units of a duplex located 4 blocks from Ashby BART. We have come together with intention to live in a fun, supportive community, and we are looking for someone who shares this vision.

  • Are you moved by your principles to live consciously and carefully in society?
  • Are you interested in the unique benefits and connectedness of cooperative life?
  • Are you looking for a house that operates by consensus and strives to communicate directly, non-violently, and from a place of love?

If so, then we're looking for you!

Our house was started in 2008 by a group of college graduates coming out of the Berkeley Student Co-ops. We share a 2 story house with two kitchens, two living rooms, 4 bathrooms, two sets of laundry machines, and a clothesline. We have a garden, 4 hens, a little off-street parking, a bike garage, and a tool shed. We are not a cult, although we do occasionally joke about building a shrine to our very cute and lovable cats. We are educators, students, musicians, yogis, sculptors, activists, climbers, and gourmands, variously, among other things.

The open spaces available are in our intimate attic space with 3 other folks. There is the option to have a small bedroom space for $210, or a double-wide space for $410. Spaces in the attic are separated by beautiful fabric walls. . . This being said we are looking for someone who can be flexible to others needs. This space is great for someone who is NOT sensitive to sound and can be understanding around requests for quiet time. We have fostered a culture in this space that focuses on open, direct and comfortable communication ( attic check-ins have been crucial!) Due to the closeness of this space it would be great to have you over for tea in addition to your interview.

More about the cooperative:
We are vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores, but we purchase food without animal products communally, with egg/milk/cheese/meat etc. bought by individuals personally. One of our kitchens is strictly meat-free for the comfort of vegetarians. We purchase shared food that is as organic and as local as possible--produce from the farmer's market, staple items in bulk from a distributor, and other randoms (nut butters, earth-friendly/non-toxic cleaning products) from the store.

We have bimonthly meetings to build community and discuss house business, and we are excited about the energy that our new housemates will bring to this setting. Builders and creators ( of all types--physical, social, political, intellectual) are encouraged to apply. We all participate in a chore system that requires each of us to do two chores per week, rotating regularly. Besides the usual cleaning and shopping tasks, the list of house chores we divide up includes cooking communal dinners four nights a week. Of course, we each take on extra tasks as needed on top of this.

Sustainability and food justice is an important house value. If you're the housemate we're looking for, you're conscious of your consumption habits and environmental footprint. We are all type of people, and this is a queer positive, body positive, woman positive house.

You--is it you?--are considerate, mature, responsible, and reasonably tidy. You are financially stable. You're dedicated to cooperative living and participating fully in an intentional community, and you're ready to attend meetings and do your chores with consistency. You maintain open and clear communication with the people in your life. Maybe you want to help with the chickens, or you're excited to garden in our yard; maybe you like to fix things around the house, or initiate cleaning and organizing projects; maybe you enjoy cooking for others; probably you have some other special skill to offer. These are all assets we would value in a new housemate.

We tried telling our landlord that money is the root of all evil and so on, but we still have to ask for: Total move-in cost ( one month of rent @ 210 plus deposit @ 555.34) is $765.34 -$300 of which is due when you decide to live here and the rest when you move in. If you want to find out more about us, then we want to find out more about you! Tell us about yourself.
  • What do you do with your time?
  • What are your interests and priorities?
  • Why do you want to live in a cooperative?
  • How do you see yourself as working for social justice?

We get a lot of interest, so please be thorough in your info about yourself! If the original Craig's List ad is still up, we're still looking. If you email us asking if the room is open, and do not provide a description of yourself, you will not be considered.
