-- TALK #1-- Sarah King (Strategies for Successful ML in Industry)
Introducing machine learning technology into a company can be complicated and time-consuming project. You and your company want the technology and/or project to succeed but, unlike love, a good idea isn’t all you need. Using a real example of a project that used machine learning to predict data centre failures, Sarah looks at the theory behind the machine learning, shallow neural networks, and how it was applied. As part of her reflection process during and after projects like this, Sarah will give important pointers on how to apply data-science and avoid pitfalls in order to introduce a seamless integration of machine learning into your company.
-- TALK #2-- Tom Murphy (Do red cars go faster?)
Do red cars go faster?.....Asking this one question will lead us on a merry jaunt into the wonderful world of insurance data and down an ethical rabbit hole. This is no academic thought experiment, these are issues faced by my team and I every day. Covering issues of sexism, racism, and morally grey activities in the industry, I'm going to raise more questions than answers! The intersection of machine learning, ethics, finance, commerce, entrepreneurship, regulation and law is considerably less clear cut than you might think. Using my company's experience in the world of insurance we'll swallow the red pill and see how far down this rabbit hole goes.
-- SPEAKERS --
Sarah King is a Senior Developer in Hewlett Packard Enterprise. With over 15 years in the industry, she has worked in many different roles. Successful projects in both neural networks and nlp sparked an interest in machine learning and big data. Having finished a B.Electronic Engineering and an Msc in Software and Database Technologies, she is currently completing an Msc in Artificial Intelligence in NUI Galway.
Tom Murphy is probably best known as "that guy who started Boards.ie" Tom's new company, the unimaginatively named Machine Learning Programs works with the biggest data brokers in the UK and Ireland handling more than a billion records of new data a day. Spanning Dublin, Amsterdam and Birmingham the team works to assist the industry to make sense of and leverage this tidal wave of information. While not a trained Data Scientist or Ethicist, Tom as CEO regular faces questions of ethics in data science and that makes him very grumpy. Like seriously grumpy. Especially before his first coffee. Mathematician, entrepreneur, poet, deity, Tom writes his own bios and never knows what to say in them.
