En-ROADS climate action simulation: ways to limit global warming
presented by Mei-Ling ShekThe year 2024 was the hottest since global temperature record began in 1850. Unless we change the status quo, we are on track to a global temperature rise of over 3 degrees C by the end of this century.
Let us explore ways to limit global warming to 2 degrees C, using En-ROADS climate simulator. We shall look at the effects of various climate actions and policies on global temperature rise. How much can we limit global warming by highly subsidizing renewable energy? What to do about fossil fuels? How about more nuclear energy? Perhaps a new breakthrough zero-carbon energy source, such as fusion, can save us from grief? How about curbing energy demand by increasing transportation and building energy efficiency? What is the potential of carbon dioxide removal by planting trees, or technological carbon capture from air? How much do other sources of greenhouse gas emissions matter? What are the climate solutions with the highest leverage?
En-ROADS is a free simulation tool developed by Climate Interactive, MIT Sloan, and Ventana Systems. It is based on a system dynamics model carefully grounded in the best available science , and has been calibrated against existing integrated assessment, climate, and energy models. https://www.climateinteractive.org/en-roads/
Presenter:
Mei-Ling Shek has degrees in chemistry and applied physics, and has worked as a scientist and engineer in national laboratories as well as startup companies (telecom and solar). She has also taught courses in physics, nanotechnology, and energy & environment. She is an EcoGreen Group member and volunteer.
