Our Worm-Worked World
by Nate Looker, Stanford University

Where did you last notice an earthworm? Maybe it was on the sidewalk after a rainstorm, on your fishhook, or in your compost bin or garden. Most of us have encountered only a tiny fraction of the 5,000 earthworm species that inhabit our planet. These lowly creatures make up the bulk of animal biomass in soil ecosystems and can perform tremendous feats of geoengineering when given enough time and adequate living conditions, as Charles Darwin documented over 150 years ago. Worms continue to captivate farmers and scientists alike with their unique abilities to enhance soil fertility, improve aeration and soil water retention, and increase long-term organic carbon storage.
Discover how "global worming" isn’t just a clever pun—it’s a natural climate solution honed over millions of years of evolution.

Nate Looker is a soil scientist and postdoctoral researcher with Jane Willenbring in the Life and Landscapes Lab in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Stanford University. Nate and his colleagues are studying ways to jumpstart earthworms’ climate-stabilizing functions to naturally sequester greenhouse gases while improving soil health. Nate was previously a research soil scientist with the nonprofit Soil Health Institute and DOE SCGSR Fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He has a Ph.D. in Land & Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Minnesota, an M.S. in Ecology from Montana State University, and B.S. in Agronomy and Global Resource Systems from Iowa State University.
