Forests Drive the Climate - Forests Could Heal the Planet
recorded talks with an introduction by Eric Lemons

There has been much said about forests storing carbon and helping reduce atmospheric CO2. However, forests not only store carbon, they have been the drivers of climate on earth for millions of years. Trees provide the biotic pump which drives atmospheric moisture and cloud formation. Trees are the drivers of trade winds, moving the moisture around the planet and feeding the rainfall and climate patterns. Trees play an important role in cooling the planet and maintaining a stable climate.

At the same time we are deforesting the planet at a frightening speed. This deforestation spread across the planet with European colonization and farming practices, where trees were cleared across the planet to enable farming and grazing. This continues today in the Amazon where the forest is being burned to clear land for grazing and farming of feed for primarily cattle to supply the appetite for meat.

If trees are the source of a stable global climate we need to stop deforestation and focus on reforestation on a global basis.

We will be looking at the role of trees in creating climate and potentially reversing climate change. We will be watching 3 videos:

***

  1. An interview by Herb Simmens, host of Climate Emergency Forum, with scientists Rob de Laet and Peter Bunyard, co-authors of the book "Cooling the Climate". The conversation will focus on the biotic pump theory and the overlooked cooling power of forests.
  2. Tony Rinaudo's Ted Talk - An Underground Forest: a solution to restoring degraded land at our feet
Tony Rinaudo with World Vision Australia, has been a leader in Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) starting with his work with local farmers in Niger in the African Sahel on the perilous southern edge of the Sahara desert to restore their degraded land through reforestation. He will discuss his effort at replanting, his discovery of a powerful underground forest., and the success of the FMNR program across many countries.
  3. Tony Rinaudo - Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration
This is an older video Tony did to explain on the ground in Niger what he was doing to lead reforestation and his work with local farmers. It gives insight into the necessity of engaging and inspiring the local population to the impact of land degradation and the potential to regenerate the land and their prosperity.
Note: EcoGreen Group watched a video of Tony Rinaudo and FMNR several years ago courtesy of Elizabeth Guimarin.
