Cemeteries: The Birthplace of Public Parks

Before cities had public parks, they had rural cemeteries. In the early 1800s, overcrowded churchyards pushed burial grounds outside city centers, where they were designed with trees, hills, ponds, and winding paths. These cemeteries quickly became popular places to walk, reflect, and even picnic.

Landscapes like Mount Auburn Cemetery showed that people deeply valued shared green space. Their success directly inspired the creation of urban parks, including Central Park, designed by Frederick Olmsted.

In many ways, cemeteries were America’s first public parks — proving that access to nature improves public health, community life, and well-being.
