🥾Forest Park🌲All Trails Challenge - 2026🐇

Please read, updates made.

📜 Today’s hike begins and ends in the infamous location of one of Portland’s first dramas on the Lower Macleay Trail within the area of Forest Park that surrounds and crosses over the Holman Property. We follow Balch Creek where we will walk past and up towards the remaining loop of the Upper Macleay Trail. We will then loop back down the Wildwood and back past the Witches Castle. From there we will climb the wonderfully demoralizing Holman Lane trail with its multiple false summits before visiting one of my absolute favorite spots in the park where was a time one would be lucky enough to see the Symbols of the Universe (don’t hold your breathe). We will break here before heading back down the backside of the hill into Willamette Heights. Once again, if the Gods of Old favors us, we will get to see the worlds largest Pileated Woodpecker (although, this also may not come to fruition). After which it’s a relatively short distance looping us back to the start point.

This is hike #02 in a series of 13 hikes that cover the entire 80+ miles of trails in Forest Park. Because not all of the trails can be done as independent loops (and we will be doubling over our path at times) it will require hiking more than 120 miles to complete the entire challenge. If you miss a hike, no worries, we have this series twice a year and makeup hikes can be arranged.

💪🏽 This is NOT a beginner friendly hike, as we will be keeping a decent pace of an average of 2.7mph (or greater!) throughout, could be slightly faster/slower depending on groups’ abilities. I try to go as fast as the slowest person will allow me. These are not good hikes to learn what your pace is.
This can be difficult for some that have sedentary lifestyles, so please don’t be discouraged if at first you don’t succeed, just try try try again.

🚗🚙 Since this is in town, I will not be carpooling myself, but if you wish to do so please organize that on your own in the Event Chat/Comments section.
For those who want to carpool, just know that you should be prepared to drive or take public transit.

🅿️ There are no fees at this location, though space is limited. The address given is for location purposes only. Trailhead is at the end of NW Upshur St.
