Nostalgia and Revival: Why Do We Keep Going Back?

Are there periods of art, music and architecture so compelling they can't stay out of our heads? We're surrounded by artistic revivals from neoclassical and the gothic to the cosy nostalgia of doo-wap music. We can't seem to march forward for long without casting an eye back. How do artists and makers search history for inspiration? Is there a connection between current events and what we choose to revisit? Is the answer in the act of reviving itself?
