Edinburgh Art Galleries Sunday Meetup Group

One of our long-standing members, Conor McCutcheon, is an art dealer and this is the opening night of his annual event showcasing some of his best pieces. There will be a range of art to view (and to buy if you're feeling flush!) including paintings, drawings and water colours from a wide variety of British and international artists.

Wine and nibbles provided, and there's always a nice convivial atmosphere. Come along to the Fine Art Society basement gallery and have a browse if you're free.

This exhibition will look at how stories and the exploration of nature come together in our childhood experiences. Flowers, trees, animals, insects and birds feature heavily in children’s books, set in both the real world and imaginary worlds.Children’s books from the last 150 years will be on display with beautiful illustrations.

Update: Apologies everyone but it seems this event is over-subscribed at TR and the tickets are already sold out. I'm therefore changing the date to Saturday July 5th to accomodate us all comfortably. Sarah Leal, the community engagement officer at the Talbot Rice Gallery, will give us an introduction to the exhibition when we arrive.

Wael Shawky was born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1971 where he lives and works, and where, in 2010, he founded MASS Alexandria, an independent nonprofit school for contemporary art, offering spaces for studio work, interdisciplinary research, and critical thinking ed­ucation.

Weaving together a number of Shawky’s large-scale film productions, sculptures (many of which have featured in his films) and drawings, the exhibition will celebrate an extraordinary artist, and through extended academic research, honour the Byzantine and Islamic Art Historian who gave the gallery its name 50 years ago – David Talbot Rice.

This exhibition highlights groundbreaking gardens by visionaries like Piet Oudolf and Derek Jarman, alongside innovative work from leading artists, designers, and landscape architects, such as Jamaica Kincaid, Duncan Grant and William Morris.​

Discover what the future of gardens could look like, and gain insight into the power of gardens and how our outdoor spaces can be part of a better world.

This is the first day trip by the Edinburgh Art Galleries Sunday Meet-up.

We will meet at 10:30am outside Boots on the Waverley Station concourse to catch the 10:50am to Dundee, arrival 12:02pm.

Return train fare is £37.00 but if you book in advance with two single tickets, this can be reduced to £22.00 approximately, before use of rail cards. Return times are 16:24 or 18:14 (the train in-between is a lot more expensive) depending how long you wish to stay in Dundee.

The entrance to the exhibition is about £8.00 if a student, disabled or unemployed, £12.73 if over 65 and about £13.60 for adult entrance. All can be purchased in advance or on the day. The train station is a short walk from the V and A so expect to be there before 12:30pm.

There is a regular and plentiful coach service from Edinburgh Bus Station to Dundee for those who wish to make use of their Bus Passes, journey times about 1 hour and 45 mins.

N.B. From June we will be charging £2 a head at each event to cover the every-increasing annual costs of using the MeetUp platform.
