“For an Ecology of Peoples”

For this event, we’ll discuss and debate Henri Levavasseur’s 2020 essay entitled “For an Ecology of Peoples,” in which he states the following:

“The emergence of a culture is always intimately linked to a territory, which implies a notion of borders and boundaries: for every culture is the product of the history of a specific people, of a particular human group within a delimited geographical space. Borders and boundaries should, however, not be perceived as shackles that restrain us, but as conditions for the existence of human cultures in all their diversity…

“Properly understood, ecology consists not only in protecting animal species, but also in preserving the diversity of peoples ‘as they have been shaped by thousands of years of long patience.’”

Please read Levavasseur’s brief essay beforehand and come ready with a few comments and questions:

If the weather looks to be nice (well, nice for Edinburgh at this time of year), then we’ll aim to meet outside, perhaps to take a leisurely stroll. If not, we’ll plan to meet at a nearby restaurant or café for a drink and maybe a bite to eat.

We hope to see you soon!
