The Alternative Loony Dook
Details
Only a day late (note Fri the 2nd!), and to usher in the new year, join us on a cycle out to the coast. We'll head out via the Innocent Railway and Newcraighall to the River Esk Path, before climbing up to the site of the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh. We'll continue through to Prestonpans and the 1722 Waggonway, to see the tables memorialising the flip in victors at the Battle of Prestonpans. Then it's on to Port Seton and through the greens at the caravan park to access the shared use path to Longniddry Dean. A very well hidden entrance to the Dean will take us downhill through the quiet, secluded woods, before emerging at Longniddry Bents 1, where we'll join the coastal path back to Edinburgh, via Morrison's Haven, the Ash Lagoons, Fisherrow Harbour and Brunstane Burns.
If the weather isn't being too kind we may shorten the ride and cut through to Levenhall Links at Prestonpans, where we'll explore both the old and the new bird hides along the Musselburgh Ash Lagoons.
Around 30 miles, and down to 20 if cut short, the ride is predominantly on off-road and segregated shared use paths and quiet back roads, with a couple short stretches with traffic Wallyford to Prestonpans, and on the on-road cycle path between Musselburgh and Joppa.
Usual caveats,
- keep your meetup status up to date - no shows are barred from the group
- arrive promptly for the pre ride briefing
- ensure your bike is safe and in a road worthy condition
- carry a spare innertube compatible with your bike
- dress for the weather
