Works of Love - Kierkegaard Note Change of Venue
This week we are discussing Part One, section II B.
There is no set translation or edition, but for anyone unsure of which to buy, a few of us have the:
Harper Perennial Modern Thought Edition, translated by Howard and Edna Hong, with a foreword by George Pattison.
We will be approaching the long read of Works of Love by concentrating on Part One first, going slowly with short readings so we can focus and really engage with the work.
In the introduction to the text Pattison gives a suggestion for How To Read Works of Love. And in it, he suggests that it was written as a series of discourses and as such suggests:
"Works of Love is a book to be read and reread, pondered and practiced"
Kierkegaard’s challenge is to live beyond preference, in the demanding space of the other.
Works of Love is a beautiful and challenging meditation on what it means to love - in action, not just in theory or feeling.
The writing is dense, philosophical, sometimes poetic. Works of Love is unmistakably a Christian text, but it has value and appeal more broadly. Kierkegaard’s psychological depth, existential honesty and ethical reasoning promise to provoke deep reflection and fruitful conversation.
We usually head to the pub after our discussion.
We're a group that welcomes all, young, old, completely new to philosophy or well versed, students to those who've never darkened the door of a lecture. And you don't have to have been coming from the start of our long reads. It can be helpful, but also don't feel you can't dive in at some point along the way!
