Friedrich Nietzsche: Human, All Too Human

This week we start the next of our long reads: Human, All Too Human by Friedrich Nietzsche. We'll use this session to introduce the text and to position it within the rest of Nietzsche's work, and alongside other philosophers whose work we've been reading. We'll also work out how the schedule will go for the following weeks.

Dating from 1878, this is the first of Nietzsche's books in which he adopted his famous aphoristic style. His free-flowing text covers the full range of issues that would become central to his later work - ethics, history, religion, art. His style is often challenging & sometimes contradictory. We'll try to make sense of it as a project, and see how we can break it down into manageable chunks for our further reading.

Who are we?
We're a reading group that welcomes all - young, old, completely new to philosophy or well versed, from keen students to those who've never darkened the door of a lecture room. We read both long & short texts - but you don't need to have been coming from the start of our longer reads. You can dive in at any point along the way.

We usually head to the pub to continue the conversation after our meetings.
