Topic: How common is Common Sense?
"There is nothing more uncommon than common sense." Frank Lloyd Wright
Common Sense is often used to describe an innate, practical knowledge and understanding of 'obvious' facts and consequences.
It is 'common' because it is supposedly shared across a majority of people and applied in everyday life.
However it has been suggested that many common sense views and beliefs may not be well founded in evidence.
Rather they may represent myths and misunderstandings, and may change over time.
Also, common sense ideas may not be universally shared. Experiments have shown that people may judge them differently.
This may be based on education, knowledge, irrational thinking or even simply biases and cultural norms.
Yet they are often accepted unquestioningly as obvious.
As Sherlock Holmes remarked, "There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact."
Perhaps it is common sense to question Common Sense?
Should we rely on Common Sense?
