Topic: Are You Normal?

What is “Normal” and who defines it?

Most people have odd thoughts, unique habits, private worries, and sometimes feel they do not fit in.

"Normal" is a wide range, not a single point. Variations in thoughts, habits, and feelings are a standard part of being human.

Ways People Define Normality

  • Statistical average: Falling in the middle of a range for traits like height, weight, or behaviour.
  • Social rules: Following unwritten rules of how to dress, talk, and act in a specific culture or time.
  • Personal habits: Doing things that are consistent with your own usual routine.

Understanding Normality

  • Average vs. Ideal: Normal isn’t being perfect or boring. It is sharing common human experiences, flaws, and feelings.
  • Quirks are Universal: Talking to objects, having weird dreams, or feeling insecure and anxious are things most people experience.
  • Social Pressures: Worries may come from society expectations rather than any problem with who you are.

Why Normality is Complicated

  • It changes over time: What is normal today in one place or country might look strange in another place, or fifty years ago.
  • It is a moving target: Nobody fits every single average or rule all the time.
  • It can exclude people: Labelling things as normal can make people who are different feel left out or judged.

Do you want to be Normal? Sometimes being different is more fun.
