Edinburgh Conversations - Controlling Social Media?
Details
Topic: Controlling Social Media?
Social Media is back in the headlines and in court. A powerful tool with both major upsides and distinct dangers. Its impact depends on how it is used or abused and its control by the platforms.
The Good
- Global Connections: Staying in touch with friends, family, and communities easily, regardless of distance.
- Education & Awareness: Hubs for learning, raising awareness, and engagement. New skills, ideas, and helpful information.
- Support Networks: Spaces to find peer support, advice, and people who share your interests or issues.
The Bad
- Mental Health Risks: Heavy use linked to anxiety and depression, sleep disruption, negative comparisons and destruction of self-esteem.
- Addiction & FOMO: Algorithms keep you scrolling and highlight topics, which may trigger addiction, and fuel the Fear Of Missing Out.
- Misinformation: False news, bias, harmful trends and ‘echo chambers’.
- Cyberbullying: Online harassment, harmful comments, and digital cruelty.
The Ugly
- Exploitation: Algorithms can influence and determine what you see for commercial or other purposes.
Controlling access, particularly for children and teenagers, is a major debate. Governments are considering age restrictions with limits on platform design and content.
However, civil liberties advocates oppose censoring or restricting access for adults, as it threatens free expression, privacy, and digital anonymity.
Can we control Social Media? Is it good or bad for you?
