Here is some information about the Tolbooth Tavern.

  • The Exorcism: During the 16th century, Sir Lewis Bellenden (a high justice / lay official) performed or oversaw an intense exorcism on a man accused of being a warlock. The ordeal was so terrifying that the man reportedly died of pure fear shortly after the ritual concluded. Legend says the terrified man's spirit never left, and he is often blamed for paranormal activity in the pub, including items being knocked off tables or pictures torn from walls.
  • Other Reported Spirits: Visitors and staff have reported shadowy figures, the sound of children playing or giggling, and a spectral presence pacing the stairs toward the clock tower.
