The wilds of East Lothian (Gifford)

Join Rebs and Joan on an epic loop to Gifford in East Lothian, starting and finishing from Fisherrow Harbour Carpark in Musselburgh. Here’s what to expect 👇

DIFFICULTY/DISTANCE

ROUTE

We’ll be going out by Whitecraig and the Pentcaitland Railway Path, then onto Gifford, stopping in Gifford for a lunch at Lantern Rouge, then coming back by the Haddington - Longniddry Railway Path, and then following the coast home. Theres also an option to catch the train back to Edinburgh from Longniddry, if you’re pushed for time/ need to get back in a hurry. Half of the route is off road on shared paths; half is on busy roads (mainly the section near Gifford, but other parts of East Lothian too).

TYPE OF BIKE NEEDED
Gravel or hybrid. No big bulky bikes like Dutch bikes, and no road tires.

SURFACE
There will be a mixture of gravel and tarmac paths - which is why skinny tires will not be suitable.

OTHER STUFF
There will be optional public toilet stops at Fisherrow (Musselburgh), Lantern Rouge in Gifford (lunch stop), and more public toilets at Longniddry Bents. The end time is 4pm but this is dependant on no punctures etc. We recommend not having anything on directly afterwards, just in case we’re held up for any reason.

RSVPS
RSVPs will open on Saturday 16 August. Whilst this ride will be taking place in August (aka ‘summer’), if there is a forecast for atrocious weather, the ride will be cancelled/postponed or amended. Please check the Meetup site before setting off in the morning! And if you have a place, PLEASE do update your RSVP to let us know if you can no longer make it, and so that anyone on the waiting list gets reasonable notice.

WHAT TO BRING ON THE RIDE
• Spare inner tubes (right size for your tyres)
• Water
• Packed lunch/ money / card (for takeaway food)
• Snacks for the ride
• Waterproofs, gloves and layers
• Sun screen/sunglasses
