Learn how to Teach Scratch to Kids

Learn how to Teach Scratch to Kids

Details

In this workshop you will learn to code in Scratch (scratch.mit.edu (http://scratch.mit.edu/)) the programming language used most widely in schools and kids programming clubs. Scratch was developed with love and kindness by MIT. It is fun, quick to learn, and has a visual interface that minimizes syntax errors. Scratch comes with a drawing tool and a wide assortment of pre-drawn art so that you can create a game or an animation within minutes of being introduced to this exciting visual language.

What we will cover:
-The Scratch interface
-Basic programming commands ("blocks")
-Building your first game
-How to motivate kids to learn to code

Note: This is NOT a session for kids. If you are looking for free programming classes for kids in Brussels contact the workshop leaders or go to http://brussels.coderdojobelgium.be/ (http://www.coderdojobelgium.be/).

Who this is for:

• Parents who want to teach their kids to program. Teachers, coaches, and mentors from schools and programming clubs.

• Adults who want to learn the basics of programming using a really simple visual programming language.

Prerequisites: None

Requirements:

  1. Bring your laptop (Windows, Mac or Linux, no problem)

  2. Optional: Download and set up Scratch on your machine. http://scratch.mit.edu/scratch2download/

Note: If you don’t have a laptop, warn us in advance so we can bring one for you.

The leaders of this workshop are Patrick Feeney and André Cortes, coaches from CoderDojo. CoderDojo is a volunteer-based programming club teaching kids programming for free. We are hoping the session will be useful to the general public and as well as our volunteers.
