Ship It & Give Back: Releasing Your First Plugin and Hacking on WordPress Core
Details
LOCATION CHANGE! Due to construction at Edmonton Unlimited in June and July, we're moving to NAIT.
TOPIC: "Ship It & Give Back: Releasing Your First Plugin and Hacking on WordPress Core"
You've built a plugin or theme that scratches your own itch — now let's get it out where the whole WordPress world can use it. And once you've tasted that, why stop at your own code? WordPress Core itself is wide open for you to jump in and contribute. Often, working on a plugin or theme surfaces bugs, issues, and enhancements that can make WordPress core better.
In this session, we'll lay it all down, soup to nuts:
- **Publishing to WordPress.org** — prepping your plugin for the directory, the SVN dance, readme.txt done right, tools and AI skills for developing and deploying your code, and how to clear the plugin review without breaking a sweat.
- Contributing to Core — setting up a local dev environment, finding good-first-issues, writing patches, and getting your name in the credits on a release.
- The culture & the payoff — how the open-source give-and-take works, and why putting your code in the commons pays you back tenfold in skills, reputation, and a crew that has your back.
Whether you're a first-timer who's never touched SVN or a seasoned dev itching to give back to the project that built your career, come hang. Bring your laptop, bring your questions, and let's make something real together. All skill levels welcome!
Please bring a laptop; this is a hands-on workshop.
