It is an established fact: we are living in a dislocated democracy, in which we face crises about legitimacy, trust, accountability and relevance. Across countries, democracy and education are highly correlated. All democratic transitions that have happened over the world have implied education efforts at all levels of society.

Today digital is changing the rules of the game : on one hand we observe a transformation of public action (online personalised services, algorithmic governance, surveillance, etc.); on the other hand, many citizens are using digital to empower themselves and to try inventing a more inclusive and sustainable democracy (explosion of civic tech initiatives around the world).

In this democratic transition, there are many key education issues which are not really addressed for now in the public debate:

_ What about the skills and literacy behind civic tech initiatives?

_ How education systems should be adapted to train a new generation of citizens able to understand the influence of data and algorithms, to think about inclusive tools for participatory democracy, to co-design new services in the smart city, etc. ?

_ How to train supportive, creative and resourceful citizens who will take decisions tomorrow ?

These are just few examples to illustrate that Civic tech is not just about tools and elections periods: it opens the way to a continuing citizen activity, over the long term, which implies new ways of teaching, learning, creating and sharing.

For this second Open Class of the academic year, we will have the chance to welcome Taddei François (https://www.facebook.com/francois.taddei.9), Director of the CRI, and Yann Algan (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yann-Algan/288124091336451), Dean School of Public Affairs at Sciences Po.

Yann Algan (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Yann-Algan/288124091336451) is leading the School of Public Affairs Sciences Po (https://www.facebook.com/SciencesPo/). His research interests include the interaction between trust, well-being and economic development, as well as collaborative economy and public policy. His work focuses on the use of Big Data to measure and analyze the factors that determine well-being and social attitudes. It also emphasizes recent progress in identifying the mechanisms by which institutions and policies can affect trust and well-being within society, schools and organizations. His research concentrates on the intersection between economy, psychology, management and sociology.

Taddei François (https://www.facebook.com/francois.taddei.9) is a researcher in evolutionary systems biology and an expert on the future of research and education. In 2005 he founded the CRI Paris - Center for Research and Interdisciplinarity (https://www.facebook.com/CRI-Paris-Center-for-Research-and-Interdisciplinarity-340423209419902/) along with Ariel Lindner.
