# What is TMCS?
Toastmasters Club of Singapore (TMCS), is Singapore's largest and oldest public speaking club. If you are interested in getting a Ted talk type of experience, this is the place to do it.
# History of TMCS:
TMCS was founded in 1967. Club founder CTM Ling Lee Hwa started life as a rubber tapper in Sarawak. As a young man, he moved to Singapore to seek his fortune. During the Second World War, his education was abruptly halted. Years later, seeking to improve his English and continue his self-development journey, Mr Ling and some businessmen started a speaking club. One of the businessmen was Mr Wong Lian Han, the President of the Singapore Manufacturer’s Association. Together, they started the Toastmasters Club of Singapore in 1967 to provide a community for individuals who aim to improve their communication and leadership abilities.
# TMCS Highlights:
- Oldest surviving Toastmasters club in Singapore
- One of the largest Toastmasters clubs in the world
- Diverse membership: age groups, nationalities, professions
- Experience public speaking on one of the largest stages and in front of the biggest audience amongst Toastmasters clubs in Singapore
- Frequency: We meet at least three times a month, with about 40 meetings per year
- Learn from our deep bench of experienced club mentors and coaches
# Chapter Meeting's Format:
Registration starts at 6:30 pm. Food and drinks are available. This is an excellent opportunity for members and guests to mingle and network.
The chapter meeting starts at 7:00 pm. After the opening address, the first segment of our meeting is Prepared Speech. There are 6-8 speakers who will deliver speeches that they have practiced diligently prior. This segment will last slightly over an hour.
( If there is a workshop, either the Prepared Speech segment will be shortened in the number of speakers followed by the Evaluations segment or the Table Topics segment will not be conducted for the week.)
After that, we will have a short 5-10 min break.
The second segment is Evaluations. Experienced members will deliver 2-3 min evaluations for the speakers from the Prepared Speech segment. The evaluators will assess the speaker’s speech, tell them where they did well, and suggest areas for improvement.
The final segment is Table Topics. This is an impromptu speaking session and is open to members and guests to participate. Approximately, 5-10 volunteers will go on stage, and deliver a 1-2 min speech. The topic will only be revealed when they get on stage. This segment lasts about half an hour. We highly encourage all guests to take part!
The evening concludes with the Award Presentation (for the Best Speaker in Prepared Speech, Best Speaker in Table Topics, and Best Evaluation) and the Closing Announcements. Our meetings typically finish around 10 pm.
