BIO:
Our speaker this month is Katie Kam. Katie Kam, PhD, PE, has 30 years of professional experience in civil engineering, urban planning, and science education. She holds undergraduate degrees in biology & chemistry, a master's degrees in community & regional planning, and master's and PhD in civil engineering. She has a biotech startup (BioBQ, Inc), which created the world's first cultured beef brisket bites. She practices civil engineering with her own firm (Wheels & Water LLC) and is running for Austin City Council District 9. Her mode of operation is to find "win-win" solutions.

TALK SUMMARY:
Can we find kidnapped children, trafficking members and victims, criminals, and persons of interest without "big brother" surveillance? This talk explores the various methods and tools cities can potentially use to assist with justice and public safety without the risk of nefarious uses and outcomes. The presentation starts with an overview of existing and promising technologies, how they pair with environmental design and community building, their uses in other cities, and the policies required to protect privacy. After the presentation, audience members will form small groups to decide on which combination of tools and methods could work for Austin, with small groups presenting their decisions to the larger group.

HOW TO ATTEND:
Our meetup is at FUTO Open Repair Workshop, 2410 San Antonio St, Austin, TX 78705. When you arrive, you go through the center door facing the street and up the stairs. We are in the big event hall on the 2nd floor.
There a few free parking spaces in front of the building, as well as metered street parking. There is also a UT Garage, San Antonio Garage, right next door, where parking is $3/hr.
