Effective Altruism Barcelona is starting its first book club! The pilot group will run for 5 weeks from Monday October 30th until Monday November 27th with the following format:

  • 1 hour of reading (≈ 50 pages) + 1 hour discussion per week
  • The first four discussion sessions will take place online on Monday evenings from 19:30-20:30 (CEST) with a facilitator
  • The fifth and final discussion will take place in person, as part of a social meetup for all participants. Location TBC (somewhere in Barcelona Ciudad).

About the book
The Life You Can Save: How to do your part to end world poverty
Moral philosopher, bioethics professor and prolific writer Peter Singer compellingly lays out the case for why and how we can take action to provide immense benefit to others, at minimal cost to ourselves.
We will be reading the 10th-anniversary edition of The Life You Can Save, which can be downloaded as an eBook or celebrity-read audiobook for free here.

Readings
For Week 2, please read "Human Nature" pp. 63-110 (pp. 86-133 in the PDF).

Participation
We are aiming for a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 people in each session to ensure a high quality discussion. It would be great if participants can commit to attending all 5 sessions, however, we know we're all busy and everyone has other commitments, so if you need to miss a session for whatever reason that's totally fine. We're also open to people joining at any point over the 5 weeks, as long as they are up to speed with the readings and we don't exceed 8 participants per session.

If you have any questions about the book, the format or anything else at all, please don't hesitate to get in touch :)

Looking forward to piloting our very first reading group with you soon!
