EA Meetup With Talks

Dear friends of Effective Altruism,

We are excited to invite you to our next monthly meet-up!

This month, for the first time in quite a while, we have a long-time member of the group giving a talk about a topic closely related to the research for his PhD in philosophy: Charlie Potter will give a talk asking and answering the question "Why Effect Altruistically?: Are There Self-Interested Reasons to be an EA?"

Here's an outline of the talk:

EA organisations have occasionally referred to empirical studies to support the claim that giving can be beneficial for the people that give. I will be taking a look at this research to get a better idea of what conclusions it supports, and argue that it isn't particularly helpful in giving us reasons to be EAs.

I will then argue that what much evidence suggests is the more we perceive ourselves as having a positive impact as agents, the more we are internally rewarded. What this perception consists of I will argue involves beliefs, values, and a particular qualitative kind of understanding. Altogether, I will argue this gives reasons for people that are already sympathetic to the values and beliefs of effective altruism to be EAs, but not necessarily for everyone. I will conclude by saying a few things about how this should inform our attitudes to people that aren't so sympathetic.

We will leave out the introductory talk and dive directly into the main topic at 19:00. After the talk and Q&A, there will be an opportunity to have a discussion and socialise.

wir freuen uns, Euch zu unserem nächsten monatlichen Meetup einzuladen!

Zum ersten Mal seit langem haben wir einen Vortrag eines involvierten Mitgliedes unserer Lokalgruppe, der einen Vortrag über seinen Research für einen Doktor in Philosophie halten wird. Charlie Potter wird für uns die Frage "Why Effect Altruistically?: Are There Self-Interested Reasons to be an EA?" stellen und beantworten.

Hier eine Zusammenfassung seines Vortrags:

Um zu begründen, warum es gut für Menschen ist, Geld zu spenden, haben EA Organisationen gelegentlich auf empirische Studien hingewiesen.

Ich werde dann dafür argumentieren, dass unsere Zufriedenheit davon abhängt, ob (und wie sehr) wir uns als Akteure mit positivem Einfluss sehen. Ich werde darlegen, dass diese Selbstwahrnehmung Werte, Ansichten und eine besondere qualitative Art des Verstehens beinhaltet. Zudem werde ich argumentieren, dass dies Gründe für schon EA zugeneigten Menschen gibt, Effektive Altruist*innen zu sein, aber nicht notwendigerweise anderen. Ich werde mit einigen Ratschlägen für den Umgang mit EA weniger zugeneigten Menschen schließen.

Wegen der derzeitigen Pandemie wird dieses Meetup online als Videokonferenz stattfinden. Wir werden den Einführungsvortrag auslassen und direkt mit dem des Abends um 19:00 anfangen.

Nach dem Vortrag und dem Q&A wird es die Gelegenheit geben, sich mit anderen über Effektiven Altruismus und vieles mehr zu unterhalten.
