Improving health and wellbeing by reducing lead poisoning

Lucia Coulter, co-founder and director of LEEP, will be the guest speaker for our August meet-up. LEEP is a non-profit advocating for lead paint regulation in countries with large and growing burdens of lead poisoning from paint. It was founded last year through an incubation by Charity Entrepreneurship. Lucia will make the case why LEEP thinks lead exposure reduction is a significant problem and what they have been doing to address it.
After the talk and Q&A (in English), there will be an opportunity to discuss further and get to know other attendees in ice-breaker sessions (in English or German).

~~~ Summary ~~~
One in three children has dangerous levels of lead in their bloodstream. This lead acts as a potent toxin that causes irreversible harm to their brains and vital organs. Reduced intelligence, lower educational attainment, behavioural disorders, increased tendencies for violent crime, cardiovascular disease, and reduced lifetime earnings can be results. The impact on cognitive development is responsible for almost $1 trillion of income loss globally per year. At the same time, the health effects cause 1 million deaths and 22 million DALYs per year. - 1% of the global burden of disease. A primary cause of lead exposure is lead paint, widespread and unregulated in over 100 countries.
LEEP advocates for lead paint regulation in countries with large and growing burdens of lead poisoning from paint. Their approach is to identify these countries, create incentives through awareness, and support governments to introduce and enforce lead paint laws.

~~~ About the speaker ~~~
Lucia Coulter is a medical doctor with both clinical and research experience. She has previously worked as a doctor in London and contributed to several EA projects. Lucia graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MB BChir in Clinical Medicine and an MA in Natural Sciences.

Lucia Coulter, Mitbegründerin und Direktorin von LEEP, wird die Gastrednerin unseres August-Treffens sein. LEEP ist eine gemeinnützige Organisation, die sich für die Regulierung von Bleifarben in Ländern einsetzt, in denen die Belastung durch Bleivergiftungen aufgrund von Farben groß ist und weiter zunimmt. LEEP wurde letztes Jahr im Rahmen einer Inkubation durch Charity Entrepreneurship gegründet. Lucia wird erläutern, warum LEEP der Meinung ist, dass die Verringerung der Bleibelastung ein großes Problem darstellt, und was sie unternommen hat, um dieses Problem anzugehen.
Nach dem Vortrag und der Fragerunde (auf Englisch) wird es die Möglichkeit geben, weiter zu diskutieren und andere Teilnehmer in sogenannten Ice-Breaker-Sessions (auf Englisch oder Deutsch) kennenzulernen.
