This group is for anyone interested in open source search, logging, analytics, and data visualization. We primarily focus on these open source projects — Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, and Beats — but we welcome talks on any aspect of data exploration.

1. Centralized Logging Patterns
   by Philipp Krenn, developer advocate at Elastic

Most organizations feel the need to centralize their logs — once you have more than a couple of servers or containers, SSH and tail will not serve you well any more. However, the common question or struggle is how to achieve that.
This talk presents multiple approaches and patterns with their advantages and disadvantages, so you can pick the one that fits your organization best:

• Parse: Take the log files of your applications and extract the relevant pieces of information.
• Send: Add a log appender to send out your events directly without persisting them to a log file.
• Structure: Write your events in a structured file, which you can then centralize.
• Containerize: Keep track of short lived containers and configure their logging correctly.
• Orchestrate: Stay on top of your logs even when services are short lived and dynamically allocated on Kubernetes.
  Each pattern has its own demo with the open source Elastic Stack (previously called ELK Stack), so you can easily try out the different approaches in your environment. Though the general patterns are applicable with any centralized logging system.

Philipp lives to demo interesting technology. Having worked as a web, infrastructure, and database engineer for more than ten years, Philipp is now working as a developer advocate at Elastic — the company behind the open source Elastic Stack consisting of Elasticsearch, Kibana, Beats, and Logstash. Based in Vienna, Austria, he is constantly travelling Europe and beyond to speak and discuss about open source software, search, databases, infrastructure, and security.

2. Zero Downtime Reindex

If you've ever used Elasticsearch you probably found yourself in a situation where you needed to change or delete the mapping of an existing field. Unfortunately, Elasticsearch doesn't support changing the mapping of existing fields, so you were left with having to create a new index and reindex all the data. This is really not a big problem if the data set is small and you can afford having some downtime, but what if reindexing all the data takes hours or even days? This is the exact problem we've faced and in this presentation we'll go over our approach to the problem that doesn't involve any downtime for our users.

Berislav, better known as Bero, thrives on doing stuff in a smarter and more simpler way, with full understanding of the tools he's using. His fields of expertise among others include PHP, Symfony, Elastic, Redis and MySQL. With almost ten years of experience in Web development, and several international projects behind him, he likes to share the secrets of how his real life challenges are solved with hands-on experience and know-how.
