Women in Data Science (WiDS Datathon) 2023
"WiDS Milimani, Kitale is an independent event that is organized by WIDS ambassador Milka Wafula (@WIMLDS _Eldoret) as part of the annual WiDS Worldwide conference, the WiDS Datathon, and an estimated 200 WiDS Regional Events worldwide. Everyone is invited to attend all WiDS conference and WiDS Datathon Workshop events which feature outstanding women doing outstanding work.”
In advance of the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Stanford Conference to be held on March 8, 2023, we invite you to build a team, hone your data science skills, and join us for the 6th Annual WiDS Datathon focused on social impact. In this year’s datathon challenges, participants will use data science to improve longer-range weather forecasts to help people prepare and adapt to extreme weather events caused by climate change.
The WiDS Datathon encourages women worldwide to hone their data science skills, creating a supportive environment for women to connect with others in their community who share their interests. Data scientists of all levels are invited to participate in the datathon, including beginners.

What to expect from the Datathon workshop?
- Introduction to data science/machine learning concepts and methods (especially relevant to the WiDS Datathon Challenge)
- Collaborate in teams during the workshop to get hands-on experience implementing machine learning models working with the
(Teams will be randomly assigned during the workshop) - Mentoring from Google data scientists and machine learning practitioners on best practices to help you with your Datathon submission.
- This is a fantastic opportunity to connect with potential mentors, collaborators, and fellow data professionals!

10:30 AM - 10:20 AM EAT: Event Introduction
10:20 AM - 11:00 AM EAT: Overview of data science & machine learning concept.
11:00 AM - 12:00 PM EAT: Python code demo for solving the datathon problem.
12:00 PM - 12:30 PM EAT: Datathon challenge introduction & team formation for hands-on exercise.
12:30 PM - 1:30 PM EAT: Datathon challenge hands-on exercise with mentoring from Kenya Airways data experts.
