Details

This month we are presenting a joint meeting with DC404 (dc404.org) at Manuel's Tavern. Manuel's does not charge us for the room; please order an item and tip generously.

Artificial Intelligence, pervasive surveillance technologies, and unprecedented public-private partnerships are reshaping the way policing is done in the modern era. This is leading to both new innovations and a host of potential problems, where accuracy, accountability, and legal and Constitutional rights may be at risk. New technologies, such as the AI transcription of police reports, are catering to the workflow of the police in a rush to "productize" technology solutions, while overlooking basic issues such as accuracy and evidential chain of custody, the needs of courts, and prosecutors down the line, as well as the general public interest, and interests of the accused.

Our speaker, Matthew Guariglia, is a senior policy analyst working on issues of surveillance and policing at the local, state, and federal level. He received a PhD in history at the University of Connecticut where his research focused on the intersection of race, immigration, U.S. imperialism, and policing in New York City. He is the author of Police and the Empire City: Race and the Origins of Modern Policing in New York (Duke University Press, 2023) and the co-editor of The Essential Kerner Commission Report (Liveright, 2021). His bylines have appeared in NBC News, Time Magazine, the Washington Post, Slate, Motherboard, and the Freedom of Information-centered outlet Muckrock. Matthew also serves as a visiting scholar in the Department of History at Emory University and is on the advisory board for the peer-reviewed journal Surveillance & Society.

This meeting will NOT be recorded but will be livestreamed as a hybrid meeting on the BigBlueButton platform.
