Justice: Can We Have Unity or Peace Without Justice? How Do We Get There?

Details

The purpose of justice is the appearance of unity among men.” ~ Baha'u'llah

What is Justice? Is it ok to do what I want if I don’t get caught? Is what’s “just” for me also just for others? What scale can we use to ensure that our justice system is equitable for everyone?

As you may know, our court system in the United States is based on “precedence”, meaning a court’s decision should align with previous court decisions. So, if a previous court decision wasn’t “just”, the current decision can also be unjust. In past ages, Kings were the ultimate judge, but since they couldn’t be present everywhere, “precedence” allowed their decisions to continue in outlying areas. These days in the US, those with money can afford to pay lawyers to find ways to “win”, even when “winning” may be unjust for others. And, if someone “loses” and finds the decision “unjust”, they often try to find ways to contest the decision. Can one have unity if there isn’t justice?

Is there a better way? Is there a spiritual solution that could provide true justice? These questions and many more will appear as we explore the word justice.

For this discussion, we will be guided by the writings of Baha’i Faith. The Baha’i’s believe that the Revelation of Baha’u’llah, the Manifestation of God for today, offers a cure for the ills that are presently afflicting mankind. We welcome all views and perspectives as we believe that we can learn from each other.
