** Elixir Sydney is currently teamed up with Elixir Melbourne, and with our powers combined, we form Elixir Australia, your one stop-online meetup for all things Elixir in the land down under! **

Welcome to the October 2020 edition of Elixir Australia! Join us on the internets for some great company and talks covering everyone's favourite purple functional programming language! We have got a great line-up for you this month:

  1. Pros, Cons, and Quick wins with Elixir escripts
  • Ryan Pauley :: @ryapauley

Working on some electronics, Ryan needed a resistor calculator and wanted to bootstrap a command line tool for quick use - disliking to mouse through website forms. He decided to use an escript to make a command-line executable, quickly. It was easy and did the job in the ecosystem he wanted. Got it done, quickly.

After the fact, he realized that escripts weren't without their issues, so really, this talk is a way to spend a bit of time to learn some of those edges and share the experience, the pros, and the cons of Elixir escripts.

  1. ISBN Verifier Verily Verified
  • Robin Hilliard :: @robinhilliard

Let's do a nice compact answer to the Exercism ISBN Verifier challenge. Then for those of you curious about other loosely typed LISP-like languages (e.g. Clojure) we'll rewrite it in Robert Virding's LFE (LISP Flavoured Erlang). After the rioting subsides we will close with a reminder that we're all part of one big happy BEAM family by looking at the surprisingly understandable BEAM VM assembly code generated by the Elixir/LFE/Erlang build chain.

Robin Hilliard, the only other person Joe Biden has ever said "Will you shut up, man?" to, is a regular speaker at Elixir Sydney. In an Elixir meetup first, this talk is genuinely not in any way related to aviation or drones.

A Zoom link to the meetup is provided closer to the date of each individual meetup, so keep an eye out on this page for when it drops.

Hope to see you at the next meetup!
