What we’re about
Empowering Epilepsy connects people with epilepsy to experts and peers for education, care, and friendship. We anchor a caring community that empowers our members and their loved ones to better understand and manage their treatment plan throughout their epilepsy journey.
Despite the fact that 1 in 26 people will eventually be diagnosed with epilepsy at some point in their lifetime - the vast majority of those with epilepsy feel isolated and alone.
They have never met or talked with anyone else who also experiences epilepsy, and they find few resources and help outside of their neurologist’s office.
Empowering Epilepsy was founded in 2014 by people with epilepsy, for people with epilepsy, to meet this dire need for learning, emotional, and disease management support.
We strive to help people with epilepsy find proactive ways to lessen their seizures, meet others who are also living with epilepsy, listen and speak with experts, and discover resources and opportunities to empower their lives. Our ultimate goal is to anchor a global community of support and learning for our members and their loved ones. We offer the followimg programs and services:
- Free Client Intake - We assess where a person with epilepsy is in their epilepsy journey. Are they seeing an epileptologist? We also teach them how to begin collecting seizure data to provide at their next appointment. https://empoweringepilepsy.org
- Free Patient Education Program - We meet with people with epilepsy and their loved ones, either in person at Empowering Epilepsy Headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio, or virtually via Zoom. We have created 28 educational inserts so far, authored by some of the top epilepsy specialists in the country. Inserts provided are personalized to each individual's specific seizure diagnosis and treatment plan. This helps teach you to better provide data your doctor needs to make a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan sooner. This meeting lasts between 1 - 2 hours, depending on the number of questions you have. You can find more information about it here: https://www.empoweringepilepsy.org/patient-education-program
- Free Age Based Virtual Support Groups - We hold 6 virtual support groups per month from 7:00 - 9:00 PM EST that consist of an hour of Q & A with an epilepsy specialist and an hour of talk time with other PWE in their age group. - Kids, Teens, Young Adults, Adults, Seniors, and Parents of Children of any age with epilepsy. Over 85 different epilepsy specialists have led one of these Q & A's so far. https://www.empoweringepilepsy.org/support-groups
- 3 Annual Conferences - We hold 3 Educational Conferences per year to better educate people with epilepsy and their loved ones about their diagnosis and treatment plan. They are offered both in person at Empowering Epilepsy Headquarters and virtually via Zoom.
- Brain Surgery Conference - in June
- SUDEP Action Day Talk - Thursday, October 15, 2026 - Learn more about Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy. What is SUDEP, who is most at risk, and what proactive steps can people with epilepsy take to reduce their risk.
