What we'll do

There are very few tech companies who don't use a single piece of open source software somewhere in their ecosystem. We take it for granted. We assume it will always be there. That we can get support and bugs fixed, for free, by someone else. It's like magic.

But it's not magic. It's hard (and often thankless) work by (usually) volunteers. How do we keep open source projects sustainable so that they are reliably in our future? What do open source projects actually need to stay running? What is it that keeps our communal ecosystem alive?

Our speaker is VM (Vicky) Brasseur who has twenty-plus years of experience in the tech industry providing technical management and leadership consulting for small and medium businesses, and helping companies understand, use, release, and contribute to free and open source software in a way that’s good for both their bottom line and for the community. She has a terrifyingly impressive list of credentials in the open source community, including a Perl White Camel Award and the O'Reilly Open Source Award. She has literally written the book on how to contribute to free and open source software projects called Forge Your Future with Open Source. Visiting Melbourne from Portland, this is a rare opportunity to learn from Vicky's wisdom.
