The White Girl by Tony Birch
Tony Birch's novel "The White Girl" is a poignant tale of resilience and defiance against racial oppression in 1960s Australia. The story centers around Odette Brown, an Aboriginal woman who has been raising her spirited granddaughter, Sissy. As government authorities intensify their efforts to control the lives of Indigenous people, Odette fights to protect Sissy from being taken away under the government's assimilation policies. Their journey is a testament to the power of familial bonds and the courage required to resist injustice, reflecting broader themes of love, survival, and resistance within the context of Australian history.
We are currently only running the Brunswick chapter of book club.
