Jim & Molly Denton AT Shelter Beginner Backpacking Trip
A beautiful out and back hike on the Appalachian Trail passing through fields, streams, lush forest, with a night spent at the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter. This is generally considered a “quiet” section of the AT. Trumbo Hollow is an expansive meadow with a bench at the high point. With fields and fences that make you feel like you are in a J.R.R. Tolkien novel, the hike down towards VA638 is one more picturesque moment. From the valley, enjoy another forest walk before arriving at the Jim and Molly Denton Shelter, which boasts a picnic pavilion and gravity fed shower. There is a water source at the shelter.

Annual Trillium Hike
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR THIS HIKE: To go on this hike you must purchase in advance a $4 Daily Access Permit (license type 461) from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. You will not need to purchase the permit if you have a currently valid Virginia hunting, fishing, or boat license. You can purchase the permit online. You must carry a copy of the permit (either in paper form or downloaded to your mobile device) on the hike. If you've previously purchased this permit online you can access your [Go Outdoors Virginia](https://license.gooutdoorsvirginia.com/Licensing/CustomerLookup.aspx) account by clicking on the green "Login" button. If you're new to the website you should click on the "Enroll Now!" link below the Login button. Make sure you enter the date May 2, 2026, when purchasing the permit.
This is a moderately strenuous circuit hike of around 8 miles with about 1,100 feet of elevation gain in Virginia's G. R. Thompson Wildlife Management Area and on the Appalachian Trail. It's on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains about 11 miles east of Front Royal. This area has been known for nearly a century as one of the densest concentrations of trilliums in the eastern part of the country, though a scientific explanation remains elusive. When the trilliums are in bloom it's an impressive display.
Bring water and pack a lunch or snack or pick up something at Sheetz where we will make a brief stop on the way out.
Parking at the trailhead might be limited so carpools are encouraged and will be organized at our meeting point. Each passenger should give his or her driver $11 for the transportation provided. The only other expense will be Adventuring's $5 trip fee.
Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Kiss & Ride lot of the East Falls Church Metro station or at 10 a.m. at the Thompson Lake Parking Area (2140 Leeds Manor Rd., Delaplane, VA).
Please [click here](https://adventuringlgbtq.com/Adventuring_Release_Form.pdf) to review our release form. When you RSVP to an event, you affirm that you have read and agree to the terms of the release.

51st Annual One Day Hike
The **One Day Hike** comprises two concurrent, non-competitive hikes of 100 and 50 kilometers that follow the C&O Canal towpath, and end at Bolivar, WV. The 100 km event (100K; 62.1 miles) starts at 3 AM from the Thompson Boat Center parking lot in Georgetown, DC; the 50 km event (50K; 31.1 miles) starts at 10 AM from Whites Ferry, MD. Both hikes proceed along the towpath, crossing the footbridge into Harpers Ferry after mile marker 60. The ODH has been held since 1974.
During the hike, hikers pass through eight support stations, manned by volunteers (see [volunteering information](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/312467618/?isFirstPublish=true)), where they receive food and drink and, if necessary, first-aid assistance. While on the trail, they are monitored by volunteer bike patrols. Hikers must arrive at support stations by cut-off times or are required to drop out, and must finish by midnight. *ALL HIKERS MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED.*
Photo albums of previous ODH's: **[bit.ly/MWS-ODH](www.bit.ly/MWS-ODH)**.
**REGISTRATION:**
Registration costs $95 and is done on-line starting Wednesday, February 11, at 5 pm (5-time finishers may register early starting Sunday, February 1, at 5 pm). Note that registration closes when the 350-hiker limit (100K+50K) is attained, which can occur within a few hours. See registration [details](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1niIsqRVC8Zl72JzAvBonqlzg4TLWiaGH/view?usp=sharing).
**UPDATES:**
For hot-off-the-press, official updates regarding registration and other information, join the ODH email list by sending a blank message to OneDayHike+Subscribe@Groups.io. For general information, check out [OneDayHike.org](www.OneDayHike.org).
**TRAINING HIKES:**
The Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings ([SCPRO](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac)) organizes training hikes in the weeks leading up to the ODH. Although open to all, these hikes are specifically designed to prepare you for the ODH — they become progressively longer, they follow routes with relatively easy trails that are generally flat, and hikers walk at their individual paces. Longer training hikes also allow shorter options for 50K trainees. Doing these training hikes, or following a similar regimen on your own, is the best way to improve your chances of completing the ODH.
Training hikes will be held from every Saturday from January 10 to the Saturday prior to the ODH. They are free, and are held at many venues in or near DC, so it’s a great way to explore this area on foot. On these hikes, you will get to meet other ODH hikers and learn their, or share your, tips on long-distance hiking. Each training hike's details will be posted on SCPRO's [Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac) page each week, as well as announced on the email list (see UPDATES above).
**VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:**
About 100 volunteers are required on hike day to help run the ODH. We need reliable, enthusiastic people to man the support stations, patrol the trail on bikes, and to provide first aid — all while encouraging hikers on their way. People with first-aid or medical experience are especially needed as first-aid volunteers. First-time volunteers receive an ODH T-shirt and the eternal gratitude of the hikers. If you are interested in volunteering, please see [volunteering information](https://www.meetup.com/sierrapotomac/events/312467618/?isFirstPublish=true), or contact Mike Darzi (Mike.Darzi@Gmail.com).
Late Morning Hikers-Washington Outdoor Adventures Take Hogback Mountain!
What’s better than summiting a mountain with your favorite hiking group? Doing it with two hiking groups! Late Morning Hikers and Washington Outdoor Adventures are combining forces on a hike up Shenandoah’s scenic Hogback Mountain. This hike features sweeping views of the Shenandoah Valley and moderately strenuous elevation. We’ll approach the summit from two directions and meet at the top for a shared lunch break and to enjoy the view. From there, folks can make it an out-and-back to return to their cars, or continue straight and carpool back with a new group.
**Here’s how it will work:** Both groups will meet at the Vienna metro station (north parking lot), which has free parking, and divide up to carpool to two starting points (Neighbor Mountain Access Trail or Appalachian National Scenic Trail Parking – see locations below). We’ll have roughly equal numbers of hikers go to each starting point, and we won’t be strictly divided between LMH/WOA. After we meet for lunch, hikers can head back the way they came or continue along the trail. Hike leaders will return to their cars to shuttle folks as needed. After, we will meet up at 4Js Farm & Brewery near Warrenton for food and beverages.
**🕒 Estimated hike time: \~6–7 hours at a moderate group pace**
**📍Day of the Event:**
* Meet at the Vienna Metro Parking Area (north lot)

BACKGROUND INFO ABOUT LMH: Please remember that this group is an informal group of friends and volunteers inititiating trips under the common adventurer model ([http://www.ronwatters.com/CADefine.htm](http://www.ronwatters.com/CADefine.html)). We do expect our members to be familiar with the best practices of hiking. This is not a group for first time hikers and is NOT a group for those seeking hiking instruction.
We are also not professionals, nor are we trained hike leaders, nor do we scout out hikes. We plan hikes for fun. You are responsible for your own welfare and safety at all LMH events. Be careful to choose hikes only within your own physical abilities and hiking knowledge; take maps, suitable clothing, provisions (at least two liters of water plus any food or medical supplies you might require) and equipment, and act responsibly and safely at all times.
Act responsibly and safely: if you ever believe you may be lost, follow the advice of the US Forest Service ([https://www.fs.fed.us/visit/know-before-you-go/if-you-get-lost](https://www.fs.fed.us/visit/know-before-you-go/if-you-get-lost))
LMH organizers and members shall not be liable for any injuries, loss or damage to persons or property, direct or consequential, arising out of any aspect of LMH activities. By attending this event, you represent that you have read, understand, and agree to the contents of our waiver of liability in the following link ([https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pQ0dedcqlyjc_Aib3TEbTX4gQRQt4C7FeCmsAPyTxd4/edit?tab=t.0](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pQ0dedcqlyjc_Aib3TEbTX4gQRQt4C7FeCmsAPyTxd4/edit?tab=t.0))
