Hey Poetry Lovers! This group is on a roll. Here’s the gist: We meet at the **Capital One Café in Chinatown** from **12pm - 2pm** every other week. For enrichment, we start by reading and reflecting on a **“published poem”**, suggested by someone in the group. No advance preparation is necessary. Come Craft with us at either the MLK Library or the Kogod atrium of the Portrait Gallery. There are generally knitters/crocheters/needle workers in both places. Our success has made us a fairly large group so we are meeting in both places on Saturdays. Don't let the lack of RSVPs stop you, they aren't required, nor is membership to our group. Please join the [Veg Society of DC (VSDC)](http://vsdc.org/) for an LGBTQ+ &ALLIES walking tour of LGBTQ+ historical spots in and around Dupont Circle. We will also plan to end the outing with some vegan pizza from [Protest Pizza](https://protestpizza.com/), if space allows, since the restaurant does not accept reservations. If necessary, the group will collectively decide on alternate dinner plans at one of the other vegan options in the area. Note that individuals will be responsible for the cost of their own dinner. The total distance walked during the event will depend on the wishes of the group as to how many of the [addresses associated with DC's LGBTQ+ history](https://rainbowhistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/rainbowhistory_dupont_03-1.pdf) we want to view, but at most around 3 miles. ***Note that this event is open to allies but please see "About the Group" section below for more details on requirements for participation in VSDC LGBTQ+ &ALLIES events.*** **Where** We'll be meeting at the [Dupont Circle](https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/stations/dupont-circle.cfm) South exit at 3pm, and will leave by 3:15pm. Starting from Dupont Circle, we will slowly make our way around a variety of addresses that were important to Washington, D.C.'s LGBTQ+ history while chatting. The exact itinerary for the walking tour will be decided upon by a majority of event participants. In the event of heavy rain, the walking tour portion of the event will be replaced with games and queer-centric conversation at the [Board Room DC](https://boardroomdc.com/), providing there is space to accommodate our group at that time. (Closest Dupont Circle metro exit is North.) After socializing indoors, the group will decide dinner plans together, if folks are feeling up to it. The host will post an urgent comment on this event if we are moving to indoor venue. **When** Saturday, April 25, from 3pm to 6pm **Transportation** Dupont Circle is on the red line and there is limited paid parking nearby. ***About the Group*** *Unless noted otherwise, VSDC's LGBTQ+ events are intended for queer/questioning folks who self-identify as LGBTQ+. But despite its legacy of violence, persecution, and genocide, fascism continues to hold a strange attraction to many. Join historian Kevin Matthews for an in-depth look at an ideology that brought death to millions in Europe and yet continues to deeply influence our politics and culture. Dr. Matthews will start by discussing how the ideology of fascism arose in the aftermath of the First World War and took hold in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. To give you a better grasp of what exactly fascism is, he’ll discuss its central themes: Anti-democracy. Extreme nationalism and anti-communism. The use, or threat, of violence in politics. Rejection of established values such as scientific objectivity. Denial of equal rights, especially for women. The assertion of power where a power vacuum exists. We’ll examine the rise and fall of two notorious fascist dictators, Adolf Hitler of Germany and Benito Mussolini of Italy. For a time it was believed that fascism died in the ashes of the Second World War, but it clearly didn’t, and we’ll look at where it remains a political force today. Finally, we’ll examine how fascism continues to permeate popular culture in ways that trivialize it, popping up in music from punk to Madonna, with its latent eroticism making it the subject of films such as *The Night Porter.* Having been called “the most self-consciously visual of all political forms,” it enlisted fashion leaders to produce uniforms and continues today to inspire a look known as “Nazi chic.” Dr. Matthews previously has given fantastic Profs and Pints talks on Ireland’s fight for independence and on World War II German submarine attacks off our coasts. We will discuss what mushroom species can be cultivated, what tree species they can grow on, and demonstrate how to prepare and inoculate the logs.
