Freelancers/Entrepreneurs/Self-Employed Networking Night
Freelancers/Entrepreneurs/Self-Employed Networking Night
Do you run your own business or work for yourself and wish that you had a community of like-minded women who share the same experiences as you? If so, join us for a freelancers/entrepreneurs/self-employed networking night where we can share our stories over some Mexican food. Entrepreneurship and self-employment can be a lonely journey. We go through unique things and experiences, and our ups and downs can feel a lot more intense. But there's no reason why we need to go through this experience alone, when we have a community of women who have experienced what you have, and might even be able to point you in the right direction. It doesn't matter if you're a startup founder, a self-employed designer, or a part-time freelance consultant; anyone and everyone who runs a business is welcome.
June Book of the month - Three Reasons for Revenge
June Book of the month - Three Reasons for Revenge
Book Club: Three Reasons for Revenge by Dervla McTiernan It is a high-stakes standalone crime thriller focusing on a dangerous game involving three targeted victims, featuring Detective Sergeant Judith Lee as she investigates a series of tailored, malicious packages. The story begins when Alexis Turner reports an assault and then disappears. Shortly after, three identical packages arrive at different homes, containing items that will destroy the recipients' lives. The thriller tackles themes of modern, intimate danger and revenge. This follows her highly successful 2024 thriller, *What Happened to Nina?* Discussion Points: * **The Ethics of Revenge:** Does the novel suggest that vigilante justice is sometimes necessary when the legal system fails? Discuss the motivations of the "antagonist" versus the moral failings of the three victims. * **Cycles of Trauma:** How does the childhood trauma of sisters **Renee** and **Margaux** mirror the past of **Judith Lee**? Discuss how their shared history of being "damaged" by others influences their present-day actions. * **Manipulation and Control:** The novel is described as a "deadly game". Talk about how the perpetrator uses intimate knowledge to hurt victims where they are most vulnerable and how they force Judith into playing along. * **Modern Dangers:** How do themes like **deepfakes**, **online manipulation**, and the rapid spread of misinformation heightening the stakes for the characters?

DDD by Night June- Hybrid event
DDD by Night June- Hybrid event
It's DDD but \***lightning**\*. The evening will be a hybrid event hosted by the DDD Melbourne crew and consist of short & sharp presentations of fifteen minutes in length on a dev related subject. Venue space is limited, we cannot accommodate more than **130 people**. First come first served! **ONLINE ATTENDANCE** You can join us online, we'll aim to get the call started somewhere around 6pm before we have our introductions and first speaker. Remote audience link --> [https://meet.google.com/pvg-uqer-pui](https://meet.google.com/pvg-uqer-pui) You can ask questions of our speakers via Slido. We'll try to ask your questions as they come through on Slido, but we may not get to all of them. **TALKS** **Rupesh, Quality Engineer Practice Lead at Fabric Group:** Validating AI Systems in a Probabilistic World Traditional software testing assumes deterministic behavior—the same input produces the same output every time. Modern AI systems, particularly LLMs and agentic workflows, behave differently. Responses can vary based on context, prompts, model state, and external dependencies, making conventional testing approaches insufficient. This presentation explores how organisations can establish confidence, quality, and governance for non-deterministic systems through new testing methodologies, evaluation frameworks, and observability practices. It will cover emerging tooling such as DeepEval and Botium, along with strategies for measuring accuracy, relevance, safety, hallucination risk, and user experience in AI-driven applications. **Leah Garrett** My Screen Moves Now: Notes From a Web Dev Building Robot UI I went from building web apps to building the face of a robot. In this talk I'll cover what changes when your UI has a body, from testing things you can't see in a browser to designing for a screen that won't stay still, and how AI tooling helped me get up to speed. **Gordon Chen** Building a Modern eCommerce Marketplace with AI As AI capabilities advance, what role is left for developers, and what skills should we prioritise? Drawing on over 20 years of experience in software engineering and data engineering, Gordon shares his thoughts from building a modern eCommerce marketplace with AI, tackling the shift toward spec-driven development and where human elements remain critical. **@tensorfish** "Ok claude, real-time transit map of melbourne. Make no mistakes." This talk walks through building MykiMap: a live, GPU-accelerated map of every tram, train, and bus moving across Melbourne’s transit network. Along the way, we’ll get into the agentic coding workflow: what it’s genuinely productive for, and what’s just hype. **CODE OF CONDUCT** All DDD events are subject to the DDD Code of Conduct available at [https://www.dddmelbourne.com/code-of-conduct/](https://www.dddmelbourne.com/code-of-conduct/) **VENUE AND FOOD SPONSOR** [Fabric Group](https://www.fabricgroup.com.au/) **FUTURE EVENTS** Are you interested in speaking at a future DDD by Night? Build Production-Ready AI Agents on AWS with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore
Build Production-Ready AI Agents on AWS with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore
In this hands-on workshop, you'll go from zero to a fully deployed multi-agent system on AWS — no prior AgentCore experience needed. We'll build a real multi-agent research assistant, step by step: \- Deploy your first AI agent using the Strands framework and BedrockAgentCoreApp — running in the cloud in minutes \- Orchestrate multiple agents with the A2A \(Agent\-to\-Agent\) protocol\, a cloud\-agnostic standard that lets agents discover and call each other securely via IAM \- Connect external tools — wire in PubMed via MCP Gateway\, deploy a citation manager as a Lambda function\, and expose your own MCP server By the end you'll have a working orchestrator agent that routes queries to a search specialist, calls real APIs, and manages citations — all running on AgentCore Runtime with proper IAM permissions and CloudWatch observability. What to bring: \- Laptop with Python 3\.11\+ and AWS CLI installed \- An AWS account \(free tier works for most of the workshop\) Skill level: Intermediate — some Python and basic AWS familiarity helpful. No prior agent development experience required.

The Creative Hustle: Monthly Community Drinks For Creative Professionals
Join us at our monthly networking drinks in May at our new venue, **Village Belle, St Kilda.** *(Please note a ticket is now required to attend this event, these can be purchased via this link [here](https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/social-drinks-for-creative-professionals-tickets-1989803804744?aff=oddtdtcreator&keep_tld=true)). You can read more on this below.* Welcoming all professional visionaries, creators and artists in the Melbourne entrepreneur and creative scene. You may be a musician, writer, photographer, designer, model, dancer, comedian or perhaps you run a business in the creative field or anything in between. The Creative Hustle is a social events group aimed at providing a hub for the professional artists, creatives and entrepreneurs of the Melbourne creative and arts scenes! **(Please only attend if you fall in to these categories! There are plenty of other social meetups for people who do not have a creative hustle.)** You know those conversations that just light you up? Make you remember why you started this journey and inspire you? This is where you’ll find them. This group is more than just networking, it’s about meeting people who are on a similar journey to you where you can share your experiences to support each other, make genuine friends and perhaps find some people to collaborate with too! Creativity can be bombarded by digital interactions, and require us to spend hours alone to work on our craft, often leading many people to mental health issues and feelings of isolation and loneliness. The Creative Hustle believes in the power of genuine friendships and human connection. As creatives, we know that some of our greatest inspirations and collaborations stem from the bonds we form with one another. This group is equally about social networking as it is business. It’s time to stretch outside the comfort zone to forge new pathways in your profession all while building lasting friendships that enrich our lives in ways that only real connections can. **NOTE ON TICKETS:** I have always run Creative Hustle events for the last 3 years+ for free, and my mission has always been to keep them accessible for creatives. However I sacrifice time away from clients on Thursday nights, meaning that whilst keeping it accessible for others I haven't been able to keep it viable for myself. Moving forward, to keep it viable, cover costs of running the event, book better venues, help manage numbers and continue to attract people who are serious about what they do, I will be introducing a small fee. For this event your $20 ticket gets you a drink on entry (most house beer, wines and spirits are about $14-$15 at Village Belle) and the rest will be split across the above. Thank you for your understanding! This format is very loose! Sometimes we follow, sometimes we let the conversation flow - it largely depends on sound levels at the venue: 15 min - General networking & social chat 30 min - 45 min - Round table intros: space for each person to share their creative endeavour for 1 min 15 min - Conversation & discussion cues (let’s chat on some deep topics with a stranger ) 15 min - general networking & social chat I’m excited to meet you all! I know that coming to a meetup and meeting new people can feel scary for some people but we are a very welcoming and open group and can’t wait to meet new people. Most people that come to our events don’t know anyone! Life is better with great people in it! Shoot me a message if you have any questions or just want a point of contact before your first meetup **Definition of a Creative Hustle:** Something that you are pursuing either as a side business, full time business or professional/semi professional that involves you creating something from nothing. If you are a: Musician, Dancer, Fashion Designer, Photographer, Videographer, Graphic Designer, Actor, Interior Designer, freelancer, business owner, work for a company within the arts industry, or anything else I have missed that qualifies as creative, then this Meetup is for you. Please respect that this is a group for people who put their heart and souls in to their work, and not just a group anyone can come to for networking unless you fall into the above categories. Please message if unsure. Look forward to meeting you at our next event! \*\*\* **CODE OF CONDUCT:** 1. You have a creative hustle which means you are pursuing something which requires you to create, and you are pursuing this professionally as your full time business, side business, you work in a creative industry or because you love it. 2. All members will show respect to other members and patrons in the meetup/event/venue. Respect can be shown by not boxing people out of conversations, welcoming all new and old members, not continuously interrupting people, not continuously speaking over the top of others, respecting someone’s personal space and boundaries. 3. You must consider others in conversation and ensure it is two-sided, you may equally talk about your creative hustle as much as you are willing to ask somebody about theirs. 4. We encourage each other on our journeys and ask someone if they are open to advice before giving it. No one likes being told what they should do! 5. This is not a group or event to be used for dating. Contacts can be made on the basis of friendship or networking. 6. If anyone is made to feel uncomfortable for any of the above reasons, they should contact me directly. 7. People will not attend who are unwell, even if it is just a cold. People in this group rely on their health to show up to self-employed work, please do not put that at risk by showing up unwell. 8. Anyone who is understood to be breaching any of the above rules may be removed or banned from the group within reason. Some people may be given a warning, or if more serious, no warning will be given and people will be instantly removed. Thank you all for your understanding and I look forward to seeing you at the next event.
