Hard Hike: the Lake Frank Grand Circuit + BYO Lunch
**This 'Grand Circuit' hard 8mile hike is an adventurous & scenic scamper! Pace: 3mph. The trek traverses varying terrain, with rolling hills that total to \~1000ft. of elevation gain, as well as repetitious rivulet crossings**... All while circumnavigating the lustrous Lake Frank, with two tantalizing trees (including MD's 8th biggest) along the way!
The hike rock hops across Rock Creek, paralleling it and another stream, sauntering up to the green and serene SUNFISH POND. The trek then weaves through the wonderous woodland, eventually arriving at a former/ historical parking lot at the Lake. The circuit shortly shies away on a spur-loop down to the official Rock Creek Trail (RCT) afterwards, creeping by a CORRODED CAR, before approaching a **rocky & abrasive, yet awesome ascent nicknamed "P.R.A.T.N.E.W"\*!**
The trek then dawdles over the earthworks of the Lake Frank Dam, offering vast views (as seen above), before skirting along the shoreline. An awful ascent up the *Old Nasty trail* leads to a spur-trail en route to the PRATHER FAMILY CEMETERY/ OBELISK (pictured)... After another look at the Lake, the hike may reveal another spur to "the Point", a dramatic (maybe marshy) spot where Rock Creek feeds into the lake!
The latter of the circuit begins with a 'fork in the road', of which the 'hard option' trails a narrow ridgeline via a tricky **"TRAVERSE"\***! A beguiling boulder lies just beyond. The trek then continues beneath a COVERED BRIDGE before snaking through the Smith Center-- home to a pioneer farmstead, a fire watch tower, and an obstacle course (-- possibly a future Meetup??). The hike concludes by visiting some farm animals as well as Birds of Prey, terminating with an overlook of a puny pond.

Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse - DCโs NEW Improv Troupe - The Ripple Effect
Improv Night at the Happy Treehouse with The Ripple Effect Improv Troupe
Letโs be honest. Life gives us plenty of serious moments.
This night is not one of them.
Join us from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM for a night of spontaneous comedy with The Ripple Effect, an improv troupe that travels around the DMV bringing laughter to places where people could use a little more joy.
Hospitals, community events, gatherings like this one. Anywhere people need a good laugh, we show up and start a ripple.
And once the laughter starts, it spreads fast.
If youโve never seen improv live before, youโre in for a treat. Nothing is scripted. No one knows whatโs going to happen next, including us. The entire show is built in real time based on your suggestions from the audience.
You might shout out a job.
A location.
A random object.
And suddenly youโre watching a scene about a dog therapist with boundary issues or a married couple arguing about who forgot to charge the emotional support Roomba.
Thatโs the magic of improv. Quick thinking, unexpected twists, and the kind of laughter that sneaks up on you.
Why people love watching improv:
*You laugh harder because you never see the joke coming.
*You get to participate by shouting out ideas that shape the scene.
*You watch performers build something hilarious out of thin air.
And the whole audience ends up laughing together because everyone is experiencing something that has never happened before and will never happen again.
Youโll definitely walk out feeling lighter than when you walked in.
And along the way you might meet a few new people who also enjoy laughing.
Because honestlyโฆ who doesnโt want funny friends?
The vibe for the evening
This is a relaxed BYOB potluck gathering under the pavilion.
*Bring your favorite drink.
*Bring a dish to share.
*Bring a lawn chair if you have one.
If you forget a chair, no problem. You can grab one of the chairs here, relax on the in-ground trampoline, or find a cozy spot around the pavilion.
Weโll have the fire going, sโmores ready, and plenty of room to settle in and enjoy the show.
Think backyard comedy club meets campfire hangout.
Great people.
Great laughs.
A little silliness.
And a ripple of joy spreading through the crowd.
Come join us,
Janine, your happy host

Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event:

BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a โdynamic, emotional and surprising journeyโ and a โcompelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.โ Others call the film, an โincredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like itโs on the verge of a thriller!โ TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s
NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. **Caller: Richard Ades**
**Band: The McKenzies**
**Clinton Heights Lutheran Church**
**15 Clinton Heights Ave, Columbus, OH 43202**
WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like youโve seen in period films such as โPride and Prejudiceโ, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alรก โRiverdance.โ Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THATโs Contra Dancing!
Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor.
Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner.

The Mercy of the Gods by James S. A. Corey
Join us for Mercy of the Gods by James S. A. Corey.
How humanity came to the planet called Anjiin is lost in the fog of history, but that history is about to end. The Carryx - part empire, part hive - have waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy. Now, they are facing a great and deathless enemy. The key to their survival may rest with the humans of Anjiin. Caught up in academic intrigue and affairs of the heart, Dafyd Alkhor is pleased just to be an assistant to a brilliant scientist and his celebrated research team. Then the Carryx ships descend, decimating the human population and taking the best and brightest of Anjiin society away to serve on the Carryx homeworld, and Dafyd is swept along with them. They are dropped in the middle of a struggle they barely understand, set in a competition against the other captive species with extinction as the price of failure.
Only Dafyd and a handful of his companions see past the Darwinian contest to the deeper game that they must play to learning to understand - and manipulate - the Carryx themselves. With a noble but suicidal human rebellion on one hand and strange and murderous enemies on the other, the team pays a terrible price to become the trusted servants of their new rulers. Dafyd Alkhor is a simple man swept up in events that are beyond his control and more vast than his imagination.
He will become the champion of humanity and its betrayer, the most hated man in history and the guardian of his people. This is where his story begins.
